Restorative dentistry procedures like teeth whitening can give you a healthy and wonderful smile that instantly improves your appearance and even makes you look many years younger. There have been many advances in teeth whitening and restorative dentistry in general. It’s now possible to achieve whiter teeth fast and without pain. Be sure to go to a reputable dental clinic that offers the most advanced teeth whitening procedures.

What Causes Discoloration?

Many different factors may cause your teeth to become yellowish, grayish, or even brown. The first major reason is the normal wear of the external tooth layer. Lifestyle factors like regularly drinking coffee, tea, wine, and smoking may also stain teeth.

Poor hygiene has also been linked to teeth discoloration. Inadequate flossing and brushing means can cause the teeth to lose its shine. Studies also show that treatments for several diseases can affect the enamel and dentin, thereby leading to tooth discoloration. For example, chemotherapy and head and neck radiation can make the teeth look duller. Antibiotics like tetracycline and doxycycline may also discolor the teeth, along with certain mouth washes that contain cetylpyridinium chloride and chlorhexidine. Additionally, antihistamines, antipsychotic drugs, and medications for high blood pressure have been found to cause discoloration.

Teeth Whitening Solutions

Teeth whitening (also called blanching) is a non-obtrusive treatment that changes the color of your regular tooth to give you a brighter smile. There are various approaches to this procedure.

One of the most effective methods is using whitening trays. Your dentist will first assess the condition of your old crowns and fillings and replace discolored ones as necessary so that they match the color of the whitened teeth. Custom molds may also be made for you. You may be asked to wear the tray twice a day (typically for 30 minutes) for several weeks until the desired level of whitening is achieved.

More advanced cold blue LED lamps may also be used to whiten your teeth. These lamps work together with photo activated gels formulated to give you a brighter smile. The gel is applied on your teeth and then the cold blue light is held directly in front of the teeth for about 20 minutes per session. Depending on how discolored your teeth are, you may need anywhere from one to three sessions. By the end of the treatment, your teeth should be two to eight shades whiter. A touch-up is necessary every few years. You may need to go more often if you smoke and love to drink coffees, teas, and wines.
