The Importance of Fail-safe Lighting

When an emergency situation arises and occupants of a building need to evacuate the premises fast and safely, they rely on the signals and exit routes available in the building. Since the main power supply is usually cut off during emergencies, it is important to invest in emergency lighting so that occupants can see signs that guide them along a safe exit route.

Fail-safe lighting can come in different forms. There are those lighting units that are designed to provide illumination when there is a failure in connection to the main power supply. Other emergency lighting systems are designed to operate using a battery supply if a main power supply failure occurs.

In order to enhance safety, emergency lighting should be installed in each exit door and all the escape routes. Other areas where emergency lighting needs to be placed include on the emergency stairways, on firefighting equipment and fire alarm call points. All these areas should be remain visible even when the main power supply is cut off.

When the main power supply is disconnected due to an emergency, it’s important for occupants to have the ability to follow the instructions provided in order to find the exit routes. These signs are usually visible when there’s emergency lighting installed underneath the actual sign.

One type of emergency lighting system is maintained lighting throughout the building. These types of lighting systems are usually connected using lamps that can work for both normal and emergency situations. If the main power supply is cut off, the maintained emergency lights will still work.

Another option is sustained emergency lights. These are installed using two sets of lamps. One lamp is connected to the main power supply. This means that it’s only able to provide illumination when there’s power in the building. The other lamp operates using a battery supply. In the event of an emergency, the set of lamps that operate using the main power supply will go off and the ones that run on batteries will automatically switch on to provide the required illumination.

Emergency lighting needs to be inspected and serviced regularly in order to ensure it’s working as intended. Testing is done by simulating main power supply failure, in order to check the lights that are still functional. Failure to conduct the regular maintenance and inspection can cause extensive trouble for your business when disaster strikes and the lights are not functional.
