Later in the Ming Dynasty, this temple was renovated and extended by the third son of Emperor Zhu Yuanzhang(the founder of Ming Dynasty) and renamed Chongshan Temple in memory of his mother. However, most of the temple was destroyd during the reign of the Qing Emperor Tongzhi(1856-1875).

Features of Chongshan Temple

Nowadays, Chongshan Temple has become an important cultural site under the protection of Shanxi Province and is home to the Buddhist Association of Shanxi Province, and is a must stop of touring China Taiyuan.  With an area of 40.4 acres, the current temple has the Bell Tower, Dabei Hall, and the east and west wings.

Dabei Hall, a high-quality specimen of Ming dynasty architecture, is the right place to experience the well preserved buddhas' statues, of which the design of Avalokitesvara with one thousand hands and one thousand eyes is amazing. The three gilded mud statues of Bodhisattvas are all around 8 meters high with vivid colors and smooth forms. Besides, the hall also has Buddhist scriptures from the Song, Yuan and Ming dynasties as well as picture albums of Buddha's deeds and his 53 disciples. While taking a sightseeing tour in China Taiyuan, Changshan Temple will give you reasons to stop for a while.
