A group of volcanologists and sea explorers utilized several lines of evidence to determine Pūhāhonu, a volcano within the Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument now holds this distinction. Geoscientists and the public have long thought Mauna Loa, a culturally-significant and active shield volcano on the Big Island of Hawai'ithat was the biggest volcano on earth. But after studying the ocean floor across the largely submarine Hawaiian leeward volcano chain, chemically analyzing rocks in the UH Mānoa stone series, and modeling the results of the research, the study group arrived at a new finish. Pūhāhonu, significance'storm rising for breath' in Western, is almost twice as large as Mauna Loa. "It's been suggested that hot-spots that produce volcano chains such as Hawai'i undergo progressive cooling over 1 2 million decades and then die," said Michael Garcia, lead author of the study and also retired professor of Earth Sciences in SOEST. "However, we've heard from this analysis that hotspots can undergo stimulation of melt production. A little pulse created the Midway bunch of today extinct volcanoes and yet another, much larger one created Pūhāhonu. This will unveil the textbooks on how mantle plumes work" In 1974, Pūhāhonu (subsequently called Gardner Pinnacles) was imagined since the biggest Hawaiian volcano based on very restricted survey info. After studies of the Hawaiian Islands reasoned that Mauna Loa had been the greatest volcano nevertheless they also included the base of the volcano that is below sea level that was not believed from the 1974 study. The newest comprehensive modeling and surveying, using techniques similar to those utilized for Mauna Loa show that Pūhāhonu is your biggest. This analysis highlights Hawaiian volcanoes, not only today but also for millions of years, have now been erupting some of the trendiest magma on Earth. Making quantum waves brings attention to a rarely visited part of this nation of Hawai'i that has ecological, historical and cultural importance. "We're sharing with the tech community and the people we have to be calling this volcano with the name the Hawaiians have contributed to it, rather than the western name for both rugged tiny islands which would be the only above Sealevel remnants of this royal volcano," said Garcia.
