California Missions Old Mission Museum

You have all heard about California Missions and Old Mission San Luis Rey de Francia – king of California Missions. There were 21 mission in total and were established along the California coast. It is located in a fertile valley along the El Camino Real, or the Royal Road. In this article we will write a bit about Old Mission history and how we should preserve this California jewel located at beautiful Oceanside. The Mission is open for visitors, so they can see the church, retreat center, the museum and the conference center. The church is open every day, so you will feel welcome every time you have the need to come.

Spanish Missions are truly interesting, even today. Old Mission and his church is historic landmark and that is why we need to preserve unique and beautiful garden and landscaping. It has 200 years history. One of the most visited part of this sacred ground is Old Mission Museum. Why? Answer is very simple – here you will find all information you need to feel and understand history and heritage of California Missions. Its collection includes artifacts from Native American, Spanish, and Mexican Secularization periods. Interesting indeed. Museum is open every day from 9.30 am till 5 pm. Fees are: for adults $5, seniors and youth $4, of course Active Military and dependents, free of charge. Once you visit the museum, you will easily create an image about the people that once used those things. You will see the clothes they wore, the way they looked and the bed that Father slept in, as well as lavanderia that Natives used for washing clothes.

The reason for establishing missions was educating Natives, so they can become productive citizens who would pay taxes and be fully productive society members. As soon as you step on the Mission’s ground you will see why it is the most famous mission. At Museum you will be able to get all facts about Mission foundation in 1798 and everything related to five stages of Old Mission occupation - Luiseño Indian, Spanish Mission, Mexican Secularization, American Military, and Twentieth Century Restoration. Today Old Mission Its premises are used for retreats, conference meetings and memorial services. Besides, people visit it also for retreats because of its peace and quiet. Lot of people attend many educational programs and events like spiritual retreats, meditation and yoga retreats as weel as spiritual direction. Mission is organizer of Mexican day of the Dead – Dia de los Muertos event in October, heritage Ball and Blessing of Animals events. At these days Mission is full of crowd.
