How Can We End Homelessness?

Posted by holycrossservices on January 27th, 2021

Homelessness is one of the prevalent problems in the country. The reasons for being homeless can be endless, but the process of being homeless isn’t a pleasing situation. In fact, more and more teens are living on the street, followed by the young-adults and the senior citizen.

But, by offering a stable living situation, we can start our journey towards not only reducing homelessness but eliminating it to the core by following practices like:

1- Setting an objective:

Setting an objective may seem simple over the surface, but in order to set it, one has to comprehend answers for the questions like – “how to make homelessness manageable?” or “how to decrease homelessness?”

Regardless of what your conclusion is, you must know that homelessness can only be ended by viewing the changing responses. People need to focus on prevention and housing issues than offering an emergency response.

2- Developing a community plan:

One way to work on eradicating homelessness is by developing a plan. This plan must explain the importance and key principles of creating a community to fight homelessness.

The created plan must focus on measurable outcomes and goals that work for eliminating homelessness. For instance, plan something like “10-year plan to eradicate homelessness in Michigan, etc. It is also vital that this plan is properly measured on regular intervals for an effective outcome.

3- Housing first:

Housing first is a perfect and permanent solution for ending street homelessness. Through this approach, long-term street homeless individuals who suffer from serious health issues or medical conditions can be moved directly into subsidized housing.

Once moved, the services or on-site help can be linked with the individuals.

4- Generate public and political support:

No matter how concerned an individual is regarding homelessness in the country, it will never be sorted with just an individual. People need to join together to create a national voice that advocates openly about ending the homelessness crisis.

But, it is always better to start as an individual; you proceed to the community and national level.

5- Be relentless:

Homelessness isn’t something new. Many have been suffering from it for decades. But, seeing how things have changed for both good and bad, it is visible that supporting causes like homelessness isn’t a day’s task. You will need to be relentless and raise your voice repeatedly.

Over to you

One way to eradicate an in-depth problem like homelessness is by understanding the root cause and then working a way out. Once you understand the reason, you can easily follow the above-mentioned practices individually or with similar minded people to educate more people.
