Next time you’re adding a few to that bottom-kitchen-draw collection reach for these hand-silk-screened numbers the colour of oat milk, drawn by Ewyenper Atwatye artists from Alice Springs. There’ll be reunions of people who’ve not seen each other in months, people flying solo, people mending from the year that was. The awards came to a close in late 2019, with a three-day blind tasting of wine, beer and cider, spirits and – in an Australian first – non-alcoholic beverages. This sweet-as bottle is Australia’s only Aussie-made white possum amaretto Amaretto. Distilled with Australian-grown bitter almonds – a by-product of the apricot industry, no less – spiced with a pinch of wild strawberry gum leaves and bottled in vessels sourced from local bars. A stripped down version of the classic Italian Amaretto with an Australian twist. It’s made with smashed Australian grown bitter almonds (a by-product of the apricot industry) that are cooked and infused in the spirit for weeks. The White Possum team then add a pinch of wild Strawberry Gum leaves, harvested from outback NSW, which adds an extra floral boost. Our Dry gin is a Nordic take on a traditional dry gin that has got its characteristics from 7 organic botanicals – juniper berries, coriander seeds, angelica root, lemon peel, heather, elderflower and rosemary. Our blend gives the gin a delicate flowery taste parallel to the classic juniper and citrus notes. This makes it perfect for the classic gin cocktails, but also ideal to purely enjoy neat or in a Dry Martini. You can enjoy this straight up or in a cocktail but I must admit, this aussie amaretto makes amaretto sours turn up a notch.
