Leggings are a type of tight fitting clothing that is worn by both men and women. They have been known by different names through out clothing history and from its very beginning have been a favored clothing item especially in cold weather. In the 14th century they were known as hose and usually were two pieces of clothing worn separately on each leg.

In some countries where there is long periods of winter leggings made out of wool were used all the way up until recent times both as a outer and inner clothing because of its before mentioned quality of keeping one warm. In Europe women wore a piece of clothing that is very similar to the modern day legging.

We can see through ut history the wide use of leggings in different cultures, whether it was the cowboys of America who wore them as protection from long hours of horse back riding to even G.Is in war the legging has proved itself as a great protective piece of clothing. Later on it was in the 1960' that leggings became a fashionable items and considered "chique"

Women's leggings as a skin tight pants or as a more modern version of the Capri's which ended at mid calv length made its way in to the fashion scene by the 1960's. Those tights or leggings were made from cotton-lycra blend and were not shiney like present day leggings, and were designed with the slim women in mind. But by the 1980's all that changed.

By then new fabrics such as nylon and spandex arrived and they continued to be popular right up into the mid 1990's. Now suddenly within the past couple of years they are back in fashion and the number of different styles not to mention sizes is amazing.
