Skincare: 7 Ingredients You Shouldn't Miss Out On

Posted by Nabila Maharani on January 28th, 2021

When it comes to skincare, it pays to know your ingredients. Sometimes, you have to look beyond the label and packaging to figure out whether the product contains the key ingredient that your skin needs or loves.

Let’s take a look at some of our favourite skincare ingredients to help amp up your current regime.

1. Hyaluronic Acid

This compound is found naturally in the skin and is one of the most common humectant ingredients, with the ability to draw water molecules into the skin.

It is also able to hold up to 1,000 times its own weight in water which helps to supplement the skin’s lipid barrier. As such, it helps to hydrate and quench your skin’s thirst for a more dewy, plump look.

2. Aloe Vera

We’re familiar with Aloe Vera being a beloved houseplant – its sticky, clear flesh that’s inside the plant leaves is a common home remedy for healing wounds and soothing burns. But in skincare, it also helps the skin replenish and retain moisture, and fight signs of ageing.

Aloe contains vitamins C and E and beta carotene which offer anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antimicrobial compounds. It also has two hormones – gibberellin and auxin which reduces inflammation and promotes quicker healing for acne without scarring.

Our NGM Cream is an oil-free moisturiser that contains Aloe Vera gel, Ginseng extract, Tamarind extract and Blackcurrant extract to moisturise and hydrate the skin while protecting the skin cells from free radical damage. It also helps to improve the appearance of facial lines to tackle signs of ageing. Due to the Aloe Vera gel, the cream is easily absorbable for oily skin conditions to balance your skin’s pH level.

3. Salicylic Acid

This BHA (beta-hydroxy) ingredient is well-loved for its pimple-diminishing properties. Because it is more oil-soluble than other chemical exfoliants, it has greater ability to penetrate the pores and dissolve all the impurities that contribute to blackheads and breakouts.

Derived from the bark of the willow tree, Salicylic acid can also slough off dead skin cells to reveal brighter, smoother skin.

4. Licorice Root Extract

Sourced from the licorice plant, the extract is filled with various beneficial compounds which delivers anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects to help fade dark spots. It’s a popular ingredient in many skin-brightening products which minimises the production of tyrosinase to prevent new spots from forming.

At the same time, it contains an active compound (liquiritin) to disperse excess melanin which helps to fade existing spots, and brightens and unifies uneven skin tone.

As part of our Aspure Repair Series, the Aspure Serum is focused on brightening and repairing your skin for a beautiful complexion. Key ingredients include Licorice Root Extract, Jojoba Oil and Gotu Kola Extract to actively repair your skin cells and improve ageing, stressed-out skin for a more revitalised look.

5. Retinol

It is a form of vitamin A that causes the skin to accelerate its usual cell-turnover process, making the skin cells shed more quality. This means retinol can help to reduce clogged pores, decrease skin inflammation and speed up pigment fading. A popular ingredient for anti-ageing, it can soften from loss of elasticity to fine lines.

6. CoQ10

Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10 for short) is an antioxidant that naturally produced in our body, but its production begins to decline in our 20s. It is vital in keeping your cells active and energized, so your cells can rid themselves of toxins for a healthier skin overall.

Due to its antioxidant properties, CoQ10 helps to protect the skin from damage by free radicals and the sun’s UV rays. It also works to inhibit tyrosinase which affects melanin production to fade and prevent dark spots, for a more even skin tone.

If tackling signs of ageing skin is your main concern, our Hydro Cream is formulated with CoQ10, Cherry Blossom Extract and Carnitine to repair the skin's natural barriers and smoothen the skin’s texture. This mattifying moisturiser provides all the hydration your skin needs without the greasy look. Plus, the CoQ10 ingredient works to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

7. Niacinamide

A form of vitamin B3, niacinamide is a does-it-all hero that is great for boosting barrier function, improving skin tone, inhibiting moisture loss, and fighting free radical damage. It helps to maintain a healthy skin barrier function which prevents water loss and uncomfortable dehydrated skin.

With the right skincare ingredients, you can build an effective routine to address skin concerns and keep your skin looking its best.
