Color in a box – Weighing the PROS & CONS

Posted by Hairbar NYC on January 28th, 2021

DIY Hair Color could be an exciting feat for some, however, as we all know that every endeavor will have its pros and cons, therefore, before you head for the experiment, you may want to read through this toknow what you are getting into.

We at HairBar NYC, always like to bring out the positive in every situation, so let’s look at all the PROS first!

Coloring your hair at home is definitely a cheaper option, very affordable when you compare it against the cost of hiring a colorist.

  1. You don’t have to get into the hassle of booking any prior appointments with the hair stylist or wait for days to get that appointment.
  2. Maybe you don’t have ample time to visit a salon, or you simply find it convenient to pick the brush and get over with the whole process in less than half the time which otherwise would have taken at least double the time, if not more.
  3. Last, but not the least, you love doing things on your own, and moreover, you find the whole process extremely easy. Labelled bottles, gloves for safety and comprehensive instructional manual to lead you through the entire process with absolute ease.

While the above highlighted points may sound like the perfect solution for you, however, we suggest you stake the final call after browsing through the CONS as well.

  1. Whilst you may be all geared up to save your money through DIY Hair color, there is all possibility that you end up messing it up completely and eventually end up shelling out even more money to get it fixed. And believe you me, this time the number of visits to your professional colorist might be more than one.
  2. If you are aiming for a completely new look, going for a home color option can turn out to be a disaster. Going from Brunette to pale blonde to red is a process and a professional colorist is trained for it and would need to apply the right strategy to get the desired results which is not possible at home.
  3. Highlights done from a color box bought from your local store can show up results alarmingly different from the picture that shows on the box. It could be orange in tone instead of the desired red, stripey or even might bleed. On the other hand, your professional colorist would not only know how to knock out the orange or yellow tones but would also blend the highlights with lowlights thereby creating dimensions through your hair for a more natural and a smooth finish.
  4. Color in a box is loaded with ammonia. This color is formulated with a ‘one size fits all’ mentality. Companies selling these color boxes infuse high doses of ammonia to the kits to ensure it opens the hardest hair strand’s shaft to deposit the pigment. Even a color box that says “no ammonia” is simply using a marketing gimmick to sell itself. Ammonia here is merely replaced with another strong chemical but the adverse effect that it causes is totally intact. Wonder why all DIY color dyes come with a complimentary conditioner pouch? You have the answer now!

Dye stains are hard to remove, actually impossible to remove. And sadly, the home coloring kit does not provide accompaniments such as capes or floor mats to guard against the stubborn stains.More so, if by any chance you end up staining your skin, you may have to deal with additional unwanted allergy issues which professional colorists are trained at avoiding in the first place.
