Obstructive sleep apnea is a serious disorder where the breathing stops involuntarily for brief periods during sleep. Usually, we inhale and exhale air smoothly through the mouth and nose into the lungs. But when this process stops for 10 seconds or more, those periods are termed as apnea or apneic episodes. This majorly occurs due to narrow airway space. As a result, there is a decreased oxygen in the blood due to which sleepers tend to awake throughout the night. Snoring is one kind of the characteristic of obstructive sleep apnea.

Obstructive sleep apnea is caused by the obstruction of the airway, especially when the soft tissue at the back of the throat gets collapsed during sleep. When the airway is not blocked, but due to instability in the respiratory control center when the brain fails to signal the muscles to breathe then, that is known as Central sleep apnea.
