Subcutaneous Biologics, a Multibillion Dollar Opportunity Expanding Globally

Subcutaneous biologics constitute a majority of today's top selling drugs and emerged as one of the fastest growing segments of the pharmaceutical industry. Moreover, the subcutaneous route of administration has emerged as a promising and viable approach for the parenteral delivery of biologic drugs. Biopharmaceutical (biologic) is a medicinal product manufactured by a biological process. Examples of biologics include body proteins, somatic cells, vaccines, and blood and plasma derived products. Most biologics are given intravenously, however, over the years, many biologics have been developed that are given subcutaneously.

The subcutaneous route offers significant advantages over intravenous route of administration such as enables at-home drug delivery, does not require skilled personnel for administration, ease of drug administration, and thus increases therapy compliance, reduces medicine cost, and patient time at healthcare facilities. In recent years, there has been a huge increase in the subcutaneous route of administration due to the above mentioned factors. Subcutaneous administration is highly effective in biologics such as the administration of antibodies, proteins, vaccines, peptides, and other large and complex molecules.

The Food and Drug Administration approved subcutaneous biologics for the treatment of women with benign prostatic hyperplasia and prostate cancer. This treatment modifies the patient's surgical plan, while helping them to adjust their lives to a normal lifestyle. For example, the manufacturer recommends subcutaneous biologics for people with benign prostatic hyperplasia who have had previous surgeries, and the procedure should be repeated every two years or less.
