What to Ask Before Lasik Surgery

Posted by keywhitman on November 1st, 2014

Finally biting the bullet to correct vision once and for all can be a very exciting time. After all, for many people, all that stands between them and dramatically improved eyesight is about a 20 minute outpatient surgical procedure. Lasik surgery, however, is a big deal and it does pay to make sure the surgeon performing the procedure is well qualified for the task at hand.

Before you decided on Lasik surgery, be sure to:

  • Go in for a free consultation – The most reputable eye surgeons will offer patients free consultations to review their cases and see if they would make good candidates for Lasik. Most eye surgeons are pretty particular about those they will treat with Lasik to ensure the best possible outcomes. During this visit, be sure to ask any questions you have and be 100 percent honest with your answers to your doctor’s questions.
  • Find out about a doctor’s experience level – Lasik is considered a “routine” eye surgery, but it’s going to be anything but routine to you. With that in mind, take the time to ask your doctor about his or her experience with Lasik and also inquire about success rates. Experience with this type of procedure is important.
  • Ask about pricing options – Lasik surgery is generally relatively affordable. These days, most people can afford to fund the surgery without insurance. That said, the best doctors will offer financing or payment plans. If you’re unable to foot the cost, ask about financing choices during your consultation.

There’s no reason to live with eyesight that isn’t perfect when options like Lasik can deliver excellent vision. Before you dive in, however, take the time to learn more about the procedure, your doctor’s background, and the costs associated. The most reputable surgeons will be more than happy to answer your questions.
