Travel Experience to Palkhor Monastery

Located in Gyangtze County, Tibet, Palkhor Monastery is 3900 meters above sea level, built in 1427. Due to its long history, fine and complete construction, special religious value as well as tower, Palkhor Monastery is listed as a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit. Reputed as the King of the Tibetan Towers, Palkhor Monastery is famous for its Baiju Pagoda (One Hundred Thousand Buddha Pagoda) as well as the harmonious coexistence of three sects in Tibetan Buddhism.

Baiju Pagoda

Palkhor Monastery is famous for its Baiju Pagoda also named Bodhi Pagoda with nine floors. Baiju Pagoda 32 meters high has 77 Buddhist halls, 108 doors, shrines and churches. Because of the more than one hundred thousand Buddhas within, it is named Shiwan Pagoda. What’s more, over 1000 mud, copper and gold Buddha statues are within the pagoda which can be called Buddha Museum.

The murals in Palkhor Monastery are very famous and exhibit a wide range of subject matter including Buddhist stories, Jataka stories and so on. The murals in Palkhor Monastery are in different poses, different expressions and rich and colorful characters, which make people feel like in magic Buddhist world. From the bottom layer to the top of the Baiju Pagoda are painted 27,529 Bodhisattva portraits.

The backlight is another important characteristic in the decoration. The common backlights in the murals are navicular, oval and horseshoe. The features of the backlight are fine, rich, exquisite. The color is contrasted but harmonious and the use of the color is very rich.

Cuoqing Hall

Having a history of 500 years, the main hall of Cuoqing Hall worships the Buddha, which both sides have Eastern and Western Pure Land Temple. A gilt bronze statue 8 meters high lies in the northwest of the Cuoqing Hall, which is said to be casted by 14,000 kilograms of brass. The hall has three layers. The first floor is the great Sutra Hall with 48 pillars covered with the ancient silk painting Buddhas. The second floor is Laki Hall with several Buddhist halls around. It is the place to hold the highest level meeting in the monastery. The last one is Xiayelakang Hall. The mandala murals are full of reputation. The hexagonal circular lotus caisson is also rare.
