Tips to keep in Mind When Establishing Wind Farms

A wind firm is a group of wind turbines that are located in the same area and are used to produce electric power. Industrial wind turbines are interconnected using medium voltage reticulation systems. Large wind energy facilities are composed of anywhere from a few to a hundred wind turbines, covering hundreds of kilometers. The area around the turbines can be used for other means, like agricultural purposes.

When it comes to establishing wind farms there are a few factors that you have to keep in mind. One factor is location. A yardstick used in choosing locations for wind development is wind power density. It is the calculation that relates to effective force of the wind of a certain location.

Another important factor to keep in mind is the speed of the wind. Wind generators are usually practical if average wind speed is 4.5 m/s or more. The best location is where there is a constant flow of non-turbulent wind the whole year. Grid connection is another vital factor to keep in mind when choosing wind energy facility sites. The sites have been preselected on a basis of wind atlas. Meteorological wind data is not sufficient for correctly siting a big wind power project. Local winds are mostly monitored for one year or more. Wind maps need to be constructed before carrying out wind turbine erection.

In order to collect wind data, meteorological equipment is installed using instruments at different heights along the tower. All towers are equipped with anemometers to help determine the speed of the wind and wind vanes in order to determine direction of the wind. Towers vary when it comes to height. Towers are made of steel pipes, which are used in collecting data for around two years before they are dissembled. A data logging device is used to collect data that stores or transmits analysis. A lot of attention needs to be paid to correctly positioning the wind turbines. Most wind energy facilities are equipped with so many turbines and all of them extract energy from the wind. Where the land area is sufficient turbines are spaced apart.

Near shores, wind sites have aesthetic impact because turbines are usually visible at a distance. There are people who see large wind turbines unsightly and other wind energy facilities have become popular tourist attraction sites. Wind energy companies should also consider the impact on any wildlife before carrying out installation.
