Bone Cancer Treatment Involves Use of Surgery, Chemotherapy, Radiation Therapy,

Posted by Sachin CMI on February 2nd, 2021

Bone tumor (also called as bone cancer) is one of the most common forms of cancer. There are several different types of bone tumors: primary bone cancer, which form in bone tissue directly without any tumors, and are malignant (cancer) or benign (non-cancerous). Secondary bone cancer occurs when a primary tumor takes over bone tissue due to some other disorder or disease, and these tumors are known as metastases. This type of cancer is the most common in children and teenagers, and thus receives the highest amount of funding and research attention.

Bone cancer treatment options include surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, cryosurgery, and targeted therapy. Chemotherapy is used to treat cancer in all parts of the body, but is particularly effective against bone cancers. It involves the use of medication to stop the growth of cells in tumors and may also involve the use of radioactive isotopes (like Radon, Cheptellins, or Strontium) to kill cancer cells. Chemotherapy drugs used to treat bone cancer are often injected directly into bones. If the cancer has spread, or if the bone cancer is very serious, surgery may be needed instead of or together with radiotherapy.

Chemotherapy medications can also be used to treat secondary bone tumor. Secondary bone tumor often follows surgery to remove a cancerous tumor from another part of the body (such as the lung or spines). Doctors who specialize in treating secondary bone tumor will usually combine surgery with radiotherapy or chemotherapy. This combination allows doctors to treat secondary bone tumors more effectively.

In bone cancer treatment, if chemotherapy is successful, doctors will then give the patient a drug combination known as "anti-angiogenesis agents" (ARA) to reduce the chances of a return of cancer. This type of treatment is usually reserved for patients who have a high risk of a relapse. Patients who have had successful initial treatment for their cancer may sometimes develop a resistance to ARA.
