There are many reasons why someone would keep a pet bird or parrot. For some, it is a symbol of their social status and for others, it is their love for animals that makes them adopt pets. Birds make excellent pets. Compared to the other pets, they are easier to maintain and there is much less hassle in feeding and taking care of them. Australians love keeping birds and parrots as pets. There are a large number of native species as well as internationally popular parrots like conures, macaws and amazons. There are many bird breeds within Australia to choose from. And once you have made your choice of pet bird, it is time to consider bird cages and bird food to find the right ones for your pet.

Birds are known to be sensitive and they prefer spacious places to live. So, when you are in the process of choosing bird cages, it is important that you choose wisely. Ensure that you buy a large enough cage for your pet bird or parrot to be able to stretch its wings and take short flights. The general rule of the thumb for keeping your pet bird happy is to give it space inside its cage. However, when you are looking at the various cages available, also consider bar spacing. The spaces between the bars should not be so much that your pet can escape or get tangled in the bars. These are two considerations to make when you intend to buy a bird cage.

There are a couple of other points related to bird cages that you should consider. One – even when you need to spend more, don’t compromise on quality. Two – don’t buy such a heavy cage that you find it difficult to move it from one place to another.

As far as the material of the cage is concerned, look for bird cages that are not made of galvanised iron. Galvanised iron has some toxic properties that may harm your pet. Some painted cages should also be avoided for the same reason. Most people tend to buy powder coated pet cages or the best is stainless steel bird cages. These are the most hygienic and safe for your parrots.

Bird food is something that you need not worry about. There are thousands of types of food that you can buy for your pet bird. There are some excellent manufacturers of packaged bird food and a bit of research will tell you what to buy. There are also some natural food items that birds love. From different types of fruits and vegetables to other stuff, there is never a lack of option for bird food.

When you buy bird food, make sure you do some research before purchasing. It is also a good idea to speak to your vet and find out what you should buy. Most vets will recommend premium bird foods like Harrison’s organic or roudybush.

Shopping online for bird cages and bird food is a convenient option because you can buy everything sitting at home. There are websites dedicated to pet food and supplies from where you can make your purchase.
