Why Are Pancreatic Cancer Foundations Important?

A lot of people falsely believe the federal government’s dedication to  cancer research is more than enough to help researchers find a cure. While it’s true the government funds a lot of research each and every year, the reality is the funding is not enough. With hundreds of types of cancer out there and funding for research not equal among all types, the need for additional support is simply a must. That’s where nonprofit organizations, such as pancreatic cancer foundations, come into play.

Government spending on cancer research adds up to about $3,300 per new case diagnosed per year. That number, however, drops to about $1,970 for each new case of pancreatic cancer. While this disease is growing in diagnosis rates and its survival rate is dismal – an estimated 5 percent at the 5-year mark – the funding support for research just isn’t there.

And, even if the federal government poured tons of money into this specific form of cancer research, the reality is it might not still be enough. The truth is pancreatic cancer is lacking in three important things – early detection tools, effective treatment protocols, and awareness.

Here’s how reputable pancreatic cancer foundations are stepping in to pick up the slack:

Funding research – This is the primary function of reputable associations. They work closely with researchers to help fund projects that may lead to better, more accurate early detection tools while also helping financially support efforts to advance treatments available for this form of the disease. The two go hand-in-hand because early detection is simply critical for enabling more effective treatments.

Raising awareness –While pancreatic cancer is on track to become the second biggest cancer killer – behind lung cancer – in the next few decades, it is still largely unknown by many. Raising awareness about this disease is critical for not only gaining funding for research, but also in helping potential patients understand and reduce their risks.

In a perfect world, cancer wouldn’t exist. Unfortunately, the world is not perfect. For diseases like pancreatic cancer to be eradicated, foundations that support research efforts are critical. So, too, is raising awareness to help those who may one day face down the disease recognize the risks and symptoms so they can obtain better treatment faster.
