I could have updated to CS6 in my old version of CS3 but not out of CS2. Another thing that they do is bring a beta version of their current offering and have it outside for about 3 months. While it's in Beta you can upgrade from CS2 to versions CS5 and CS6 and buy it in the discounted upgrade price but when it looses the Beta label then the 3 version rule is used.
