Botox Contains Isolated Toxin

Posted by AgelessPharmacy on November 20th, 2014

Botulinum Toxin Type A, also called Botox in general, is a protein and neurotoxin produced by the bacterium Clostridium Botulinum that causes Botulism. It blocks nerve activity in the muscles causing a temporary reduction in muscle activity. Botox contains only tiny quantities of the isolated toxin without any intact bacteria. It is commercially sold under the names Botox, Vistabel, Botox Cosmetic (Onabotulinumtoxin A), Dysport (Abobotulinumtoxin A), Bocouture, Xeomin (IncobotulinumtoxinA) and Myobloc (RimabotulinumtoxinB). Botulinum toxin works by preventing signals from the nerve cells reaching muscles, leaving the muscles without instructions to contract and thereby paralyzing them.

Botox is used in the treatment of various medical conditions and also for certain cosmetic procedures. It is used to treat severe neck and shoulder muscle spasms (Idiopathic Rotational Cervical Dystonia), muscle spasms in the arms and hands and also in severe underarm sweating (Primary Axillary Hyperhydrosis). It is used in the treatment of certain eye muscle conditions like uncontrolled blinking and spasm of the eyelids (Blepharospasm) caused by nerve disorders. Overactive bladder and incontinence caused by nerve disorders such as spinal cord injury is also treated. Chronic migraine is also treated with Botox. Post-stroke Upper Limb Spasticity and Hemi facial Spasm is also treated. Botox comes in a vial containing 100 units of freeze-dried product which is stored at -5degree F .It is usually reconstituted with 2 -4cc of normal saline. At 2cc reconstitute, the dose is 50u per cc or 5u per 0.1cc.The dose is 25u per cc or 2.5u per 0.1cc if it is reconstituted at 4cc.

Botox is used in cosmetic treatments to temporarily reduce the appearance of facial wrinkles, worry lines between the eyes, crow’s feet, deep forehead wrinkles, eyebrow droop, downturned lips and also necklines. It targets the muscles below the treatment area and causes the muscles to relax, which in turn smoothens out the wrinkles. It has become quite a popular treatment to regain youthful appearance. It has to be given by a trained medical professional .The treatment should be spaced at least three months apart. It should not be taken by those who are allergic to botulinum toxin, has an infection at the site of the injection to be given, and has myasthenia gravis, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis or Eaton Lambert.

There are also certain side effects to the treatment which includes allergic reactions, rashes, itching, headaches, neck pain, difficulty in swallowing, shortness of breath, nausea, weakness, and also pain and tenderness at the injection site.

Botox treatment is found to be successful when the dosage, frequency of treatment and clinical conditions are taken into account.
