Are dark circles giving you sleepless nights? It’s common in men and women. Dark circles sometimes appear with bags under lower eyelids and make one look extremely tired or old.

Most of us associate the causes of dark circles to stress and fatigue. However, there are a multitude of reasons why we could have dark circles.

Reasons For Dark Circles?

There is no single explanation for the puffy or heavily sore eyes.

  1. Exertion

Fatigue is the most common explanation for the dark circles under our lower eyelids. When you stay up a few hours past your regular bedtime or oversleep - it can give rise to dark circles. Besides, when you deprive yourself of sleep, you end up waking tired and sluggish. When you lose sleep, it can cause your skin to appear black and pale, making it easier to show dark tissues and blood vessels under your skin.

It also leads to the formation of fluid under the eyes, which makes your eyes puffy. The dark circles you see can simply be shadows cast by your puffy eyelids as a result.

    2.  Strain In Eyes

We often have our parents and elders stress the importance of spending less time on our phones and computer screens. There is a valid reason. When we spend endless hours on our phone and computer or TV screens, we end up straining our eyelids. As a result the blood vessels around our eyes can enlarge due to this, the skin near your eyes will start to form dark patches.

    3.  Dehydration

Losing water nutrients from your body is another cause for forming dark circles. When you deprive yourself of water, the skin underneath your eyes starts to look hollow and sunken.

    4.  Exposure to Sun

Spending too much time and exposure to the sun forms excess melanin responsible for colour in your skin. Therefore when your body, especially your eyes, are exposed to sun, it can cause pigmentation around your eyes.

Home Treatments For Dark Circles

In most cases, dark circles are nothing that you need to worry about. Most of the time, it’s because of aging and fatigue. There are several ways to reduce the swollen and puffy patches below your eyelids through home treatments.

  • Apply cold compresses to your dark circles. It helps to reduce puffiness and compress dilated blood vessels. Cover a few ice cubes and apply them to your eyes in a clean washcloth. You may also use cool water to dampen a washcloth and apply it to the skin under your eyes with the same effect for 20 minutes. If the fabric becomes warm or if the ice melts, repeat this process.

  • Get proper sleep. It will also help reduce the presence of dark circles by catching up on sleep. Deprivation of sleep will make the skin look pale, making the dark circles more visible. To keep dark circles from forming, give yourself seven to eight hours of rest.

  • Apply cold tea bags. Applying cold tea bags are the most useful ways to treat dark circles. Tea has caffeine and antioxidants that can help improve blood circulation, reduce blood vessels, and decrease liquid retention under the skin. The method is quite simple. For five minutes, soak two black or green tea bags in hot water. Let it refrigerate for 15-20 minutes. Apply them to your eyes and let it be for 20 minutes. Rinse and wash.

  • Cucumbers. We all may have used cucumbers as a part of our skin routine. But do you know why? Cucumbers are the most refreshing way to treat swollen and puffy eyes and curb dark circles underneath our eyes. You can simply slice a cucumber and refrigerate it for 30 minutes. Later, place it above your eyelids and wash off later with lukewarm water. Repeat this process twice a day daily and see refreshing results.

  • Almond Oil. Did you know that almond oil is a storehouse of Vitamin E & K, and helps to lighten dark circles and swollen eyes? Yes, that’s right. It is rich in inflammatory and antioxidant properties which can treat dark circles without causing any skin irritation. Almond oil is great in helping you to get your glow back. Simply massage your dark circles with almond oil and leave it the entire night. Next morning, wash it off with water. Repeat this daily to get effective results.

You can use these home-based remedies for effective results. However, determine the underlying causes and consult your health practitioner if it persists for a prolonged time.
