This guideline is for people aged 21 years and over.

Roll-your-own (RYO) cigarettes are fast gaining popularity because it’s cheaper than manufactured cigarettes and smokers can adjust the nicotine content and the choice of tobacco in every stick.

There are three methods of rolling cigarettes; manually rolling by hand, using a cigarette roller, or using a cigarette rolling machine also called a cigarette injector machine.

What Kind of Tobacco do You Use to Roll Cigarettes?

The scientific name of tobacco is Nicotiana; there are over 20 species of tobacco plants that are identified. Among these is Nicotiana Tabacum, the cultivated tobacco consumed by humans. The natural tobacco leaf is cured, aged, and processed for smoking, chewing, snuffing, and extraction of nicotine. Here are some of the tobaccos for your roll cigarettes:

Virginia tobacco

Also called Brightleaf tobacco since it turns into yellow-orange color when cured. It does not contain any additives and has a wide range of nicotine levels. The smoke of the flue-cured leaves is aromatic and less alkaline with an acidic taste from the high levels of natural sugar.

Burley tobacco

Burley leaves are treated through air-curing. The smoke from Burley contains more alkaline that leaves a bitter taste and aroma to cigarettes. Sugar like molasses or licorice is added to improve the taste.

Oriental tobacco

Often called Turkish tobacco, it is sun-cured which provides its distinct flavor. Oriental leaves have a low nitrogen content and fair amounts of carbohydrates, with less protein than the other varieties.

Kentucky tobacco

Kentucky is pure, dark-fired blend tobacco with a high amount of nicotine level. It burns well and leaves a rich, floral taste that adds body and fragrance to the product.

What are the 3 Different Types of Tobacco Products?

There are myriad varieties of tobacco products available worldwide. Each kind is fashioned by applying different tobaccos and additives, and by applying different manufacturing processes. Here are the three main types of tobacco products in the market.

Cigarettes

Cigarettes are the most common type of manufactured tobacco. It is a combination of cured, finely cut tobacco wrapped in a paper roll. Most cigarettes have a filter at the tip.

Cigars

Cigars are made from a roll of tobacco wrapped in tobacco leaf, have higher contents of nicotine, and do not have a filter. Most cigars are made from a single type of air-cured or dried tobacco. There are four types of cigars, namely; little cigars, cigarillos, regular cigars, and premium cigars.

Electronic cigarettes

Or e-cigarettes are battery-powered that turn nicotine into a vapor that is inhaled by the consumer. There is no smoke, no burning of tobacco, and it produces heated mist. Cartridges are refillable that comes in different nicotine concentrations and flavors.

Effective and Easy Methods of Rolling Tobacco

A word of caution; cigarette smoking is dangerous to your health, pocket, hygiene, and it is addictive.

Rolling the perfect tobacco takes a lot of practice, but with the right equipment and materials, it can be made easy. You get to customize your own cigarette by selecting the tobacco that fits your taste and the thickness of your hand-rollie, and it is cheaper.

Gather your materials

The basic materials are tobacco and rolling paper, of course. Consider using filters that slightly reduce the health danger of smoking. If you're having difficulty rolling with your use a cigarette roller or rolling machine which is a cheap and easy way to make cigarettes.

The rolling paper will determine the size of your cigarette, large rolling papers will hold more tobacco. Similarly, the filter will also have an effect on the size of your cigarette, it will be nearly the same size as the filter after rolling. A newbie roller should start with a large paper and it is easier to roll.

Rolling by hand

Prepping your cigarette by hand is no easy task for a newbie.

  1. Lay down a rolling paper on a flat surface with the side marked by a thin strip of adhesive looking up and away from you. The size of the cigarette will depend on the size of the rolling paper.
  2. Place a filter at one end of the inner portion and fill the rest of the paper with tobacco. Too much tobacco will make it hard to roll, too little tobacco will result in a small roll that will not burn well.
  3. Spread the tobacco evenly so that there will be no dense part. Push the tobacco down so that it will be tightly packed.

  4. Hold the cigarette at the filter, allow the paper to form a U-shape around the filter. Continually push the tobacco down to make it circular and more compact.

  5. Slowly roll the paper. Try to fold the paper near you beneath the adhesive and tobacco, and keep on rolling until you are underneath the adhesive. You need to have a tight roll for the cigarette to burn evenly, and then roll around the filter should be extra tight to keep it in place. It takes a lot of practice to master the craft.
  6. Apply a bit of saliva at the adhesive strip and finish rolling up. Apply pressure at the tip of the cigarette and you’re good to go. If you notice that some tobacco at the tip dropped during rolling, you can add tobacco and push it with a pencil or anything similar. This will make your cigarette compact for a good smoke.
