Wolong Panda Reserve, also named Wolong National Nature Reserve, or Wolong Nature Reserve, is located in the east of Mt. Qionglai, at the foot of the Tibetan Plateau in the Aba Tibetan Autonomous Region of Sichuan Province, and a 130 kilometer distance far from Chengdu, the capital city of the province. Its peak is in the southwest of the mysterious Four Girls Mountain. The Wolong Reserve ranges from 1,200m to 6,250m above sea level.

Wolong means sleeping dragon. The local ethic minority are the Qiang people, who believe a giant dragon came wandering through the valley and fell in love with the beauty of the mountains and trees. The dragon decided to go to sleep and then never woke up. The Pitiao River runs through the valley.

Wolong is home to over 6,000 species of plants and animals. It is one of the last protected homes of the giant panda, red panda, takin, and golden snub-nose monkey. Wolong contains lush deciduous and evergreen temperate forests and high, ice-covered mountains.

The Wolong Nature Reserve has four general regions:

1. Mountain slopes covered in deciduous and coniferous forests as well as bamboo groves

2. River valleys, where most of the people live and farm

3. High alpine slopes above the tree line where wildflowers grow and yaks live

4.20 glacier-covered mountain peaks over 4,000 m above sea level

Established in 1963, the reserve covers an area of about 200,000 hectares in the Qionglai Mountains region. Wolong National Nature Reserve houses more than 150 highly endangered giant pandas. The reserve is also a home to many other endangered species including: red pandas, golden monkeys, white-lipped deer and many precious plants. Wolong gets up to 100,000 visitors every year. The Wolong National Nature Reserve has a reputation for its natural beauty.
