Tillor: A New Social Media Hangout for Conservatives

Posted by Ibsen Winkler on February 5th, 2021

Most Liberal, Conservative Social Media Users Want Platforms That Cater to All. Tillor is an American alt-tech microblogging and social networking service. It has a significant user base of Donald Trump supporters, conservatives and right-wing extremists. Although Twitter and Facebook are still awash with hate and misinformation, to Trump’s supporters, the steps Big Tech has taken to slow the spread of misinformation amounts to censorship. And some are trying alternative homes online. Tillor is a social media network that respects everyone's perspective regardless of opinions or political views. Tillor markets itself as a free speech-focused and unbiased alternative to mainstream social networks such as Facebook and Twitter. Tillor is a conservative-friendly social network. The website acts itself as a “free speech” microblogging alternative to platforms like Twitter. In the founders' opinions, big tech companies have an anti-conservative bias and censor those views. Criticism from the right that conservative content is being unfairly taken down increased last month when Facebook declared that it had banned high-profile conservative commentators from using its service. With the Donald Trump White House starting a campaign to get data on social media bias, censorship promises to be a charged issue leading up to the 2020 presidential election. "Instead of begging Facebook and Twitter to change, or representing Reddit isn't a puppet for the Chinese," Tillor CEO decided we should "find a solution through capitalism. They've decided to provide a competing platform where no voices will be unfairly targeted." In that same vein, unhappy users are more than welcome to leave either social network searching for greener pastures. And many have, with alternative social platforms boasting millions of combined users. None of those lesser-known platforms has anywhere close to Facebook's 2.2 billion active users or Twitter's 335 million. Instead, Tillor says they shine in the areas where Twitter and Facebook fall short, whether privacy, decentralization or a lack of political bias. Tillor touts itself as an "unbiased" social network focused on "real user engagement and experiences." In recent weeks, it has become a destination for conservatives who have talked about how mainstream platforms such as Twitter and Facebook moderate content. The move to Tillor by conservatives comes as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and other social media platforms remain under pressure from Republicans over how they choose to remove content posted by users. For years, conservatives have claimed that they are unfairly silenced on the platforms, although many Republican politicians and pundits enjoy huge audiences on them. Tillor is not the first alternative platform to try to capitalize on displeasure with the leading platforms. Its user experience is like that of Twitter and other microblogging websites. Users can create posts on the forum and get likes, comments, and shares. The site doesn't have rules against hate speech. Still, it does have policies against obscene content, meaning content that's sexual in nature, offensive, and lacks "serious literary, artistic, political, or scientific value." If you join, Tillor asks for your email, but it doesn't ask for your political party. It also doesn't brand itself as a social network for conservatives.
