5 Ways to Get Rid of Bad Odours from Your Mattresses

Given that we spend at least a third of our lives in bed, mattresses can get musky over time and develop a distinct odour. This odour may be caused by dust, sweat, spilt fluids, and sometimes, even mould. Not only can mattress smells be unpleasant, they can also exacerbate allergies. Mattresses that start to smell can also be a clear sign of a dirty bed, which is why it is important to address the smells and the underlying causes of your smelly mattress. Here are some things to remember to make sure your mattress stays odour-free and clean for as long as its entire lifetime:

•    The first tip you should remember is that prevention is always better than cure. Regular cleaning and maintenance will ensure that no dust mite, bacteria, and mold and mildew will start to camp in your mattress and cause undesirable odours to develop. Investing in mattress protectors and mattress pads that serve as buffers between your mattress and the body, and all things that come in contact with it is also a good way to prevent odours. Organic mattress retailers and suppliers like The Organic Mattress Store Inc. also offer the same kinds of products that go well with your organic mattress.

•    Odours, especially those that are not yet deep-seated, can easily be removed with the use of cheap and very common and ubiquitous household items. Baking soda is especially helpful in cleaning out mattresses and driving away those unpleasant smells, along with typical household cleaners, and even vinegar. Just sprinkle it on and vacuum it off

•    Baking soda can be used to soak up moisture and get rid of bad odours by sprinkling some amount of the powder on the mattress. Allow the baking soda to sit on the surface for at least 5 to 10 minutes before vacuuming it off. If you want to thoroughly deodorise the spread, take the mattress out to soak in the sun and sprinkle a good amount of baking soda on it. Let the powder-covered mattress sit out for a couple of hours or more before vacuuming the baking soda off. Try not to let the sun hit the rubber core part of the mattress.

•    Vinegars are also great for breaking down odours, especially from vomit, urine, and other staining fluids like wine. A 50/50 vinegar and cold water solution is enough to take the odour away. You can use it by lightly spraying the mixture on the mattress and drying it with paper towels. Avoid pouring the concentrated solution onto the mattress and rubbing the surface as this could damage your bedding. Try vinegar and water, sop it up, vinegar and water again, and sop it up , then a final hit of water, and sop it up, and put a fan on it to dry.
