Chemical Sensors Find Application in Healthcare and Various Other Sectors

The uses of chemical sensors, in the medical and health fields, are diverse, depending upon their function. These sensors can detect the concentration of a particular analyte in a sample or liquid, they can sense changes in temperature or pressure and some types can even sense light. Their usefulness extends far beyond the lab as they are widely used in manufacturing, environmental monitoring, and personal protection.

There are two broad categories of chemicals sensors: analog and digital. The analog sensor converts the electrical signal into an electrical signal and displays it on a display. The digital type detects changes in the electronic signal that is interpreted by the sensor and can provide temperature, humidity, lighting and other information. This type of sensor can detect two different kinds of molecules: oxygen or other gases, and carbon dioxide or other gasses. In addition, some types of electronic chemical sensors can detect certain types of organic compounds, like glucose, phenol, and ferric oxide.

There are several kinds of electronic chemical sensors, but the most popular are the carbon and capacitive types. Carbon and cap sensor combinations allow detection of the concentration of a specific analyte in a liquid. Other types of common sensors include, ultrasonic and radar, which detect the frequency of movement, ultrasound and laser that function by emitting waves into the sample or analyzer. And of course, the most common, and the most expensive, is the electromagnetic sensor, which uses electromagnetic waves to detect the concentration of a particular analyte in a material or sample.
