Guidelines For OSHA Fall Protection Training

Posted by oshaprosusa on February 8th, 2021

No individual thinks about getting injured by falling. Sure, young children and elderly citizens have been known to fall due to compromised mobility, but a hale and hearty individual does not even dream of such an eventuality. It would be foolhardy not to take all necessary precautions at work, however. The truth is quite different, though. Statistics reveal that OSHA fall protection training was enforced by OSHA in 2019 as falls from great heights continue to remain one of the most frequent causes of deaths at construction sites today.

While the total number of falls cannot be prevented by supervisors or owners of a construction firm, they can protect the employees and temporary workers on the site by providing them with the right training and adopting safety measures within the areas undergoing construction. The concerned employer has no reason to be dissatisfied with incurring the training costs, though. On the contrary, the company owners stand to gain both peace of mind and financially by thwarting legal issues and avoidance of workman compensation claims.

How Falls occur?

The construction industry has the most significant risk of having its workers injured due to falls. Other industries are not safe from such risks. Everywhere there is a need for climbing great heights, there is a possibility of fall too.  Ditto for shopping malls and upscale commercial establishments where the floors are polished with wax. There have been instances of slippage and falls in such areas as well. It has been noted that the most common causes of falls take place when there is:-

· Absence of or inadequate availability of safety equipment

· Failure to use the safety equipment properly

· Ignoring safety protocols

· Neglecting to heed the standards pertaining to fall protection

Fall Protection training Management

Every company engaged in the construction business or at risk of falls should sign up for a training program to prevent falls. It is essential to follow specific guidelines to ensure each employee's well-being to work in a risk-prone area. Tips for doing it successfully include:-

  • Training of all new employees by making them aware of fall protection standards

· Asking the old workforce to take the training once again if OSHA introduces new guidelines or decides to use new safety equipment

· Adding fall protection training as a prerequisite for obtaining employment at the site

· Demonstration of using safety equipment during work. Employees who fail to understand the system should be provided additional hours to master the technique too.

· Testing of employees after the training and observing whether the workers can inspect, wear, adjust, and remove the right equipment without wastage of time

· Arranging training sessions at the work site for ease of participation

OSHA also provides safety training and confined space certification to help workers remain well protected from the dangers of entering a confined space containing hazardous substances or any tapering edge that signals risk for fall.
