Selecting a Medical specialty, while still in medical school is a tough choice for many. Most Medical undergraduates have some idea of what they want to study, but are not entirely clear on whether they are making the right choice. The choices of further study are great, but most people making the choice are not clear of what the job entails. Students have to make their choices in India, based on their PG entrance exam scores, as PG Seats are allotted based on that. People have to make their choices based on how they perform in the test and have to give three preferences, of their chosen field of study. Based on the number of available seats and their rank, they are allotted a Medical Specialty. While selecting a specialty one needs to first decide, whether he wants to be treating patients with Medicines or would like to be operating. If he wants to be more on the Medicinal side,, then he could look at specialties like internal medicine, pediatrics, radiology, pathology, forensic medicine and if he is interested in the surgical discipline, then he could look at General Surgery, Ophthalmology, orthopedics and the like. The second question one must ask oneself while selecting a Medical Specialty is the individual looking at a field of study like orthopedics or Dermatology where there are no further sub specialties, or are looking at field like internal medicine, general surgery or pediatrics, where one can further sub specialize. On the other hand if one selects Pathology, Dermatology and even Radiology to some extent one can open his own clinic or partner with a senior doctor in the field to open one’s own private practice.  It needs to be stated here that all specialists can open their private clinics, but some like those in the surgical disciplines need to be part of an infirmary to provide the unsurpassed attention to their patients.

The next and last question one should ask oneself, is what kind of patients one wants to treat. If one is looking to treat only children then pediatrics is the answer, women-then Gynecology would be the best bet, if one wants to see all kinds of patients and be involved in the way their treatment is to be selected then one could choose radiology or pathology.
