WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU DON’T CLEAN YOUR GUTTERS?

Posted by fresh cleaning on February 10th, 2021

The purpose of a gutter is to carry water from a building to a good drainage area. If gutters are not cleaned, material will collect in the gutter channel, and water will spill onto the building and foundation. Clean the gutters by removing debris and then flushing the gutter with a hose. I have a question? Get an answer from a handyman now!

How to clean gutters

Foundation damage

If the gutters are not cleaned and water overflows from the gutters, it will run down along the foundation of the building. This can soften the soil under and around it, leading to cracks in the foundation. Also, if the base is wet and then freezes, this will lead to cracking and cracking. In some cases, water damage can cause structural failure in a building.

Rotten wood

If the gutters are clogged, the water will spill over the building and will also be trapped in the gutter after the rain. This moisture will cause rot in the wood fascia and soffit boards (the wood near where the gutters meet). The wood rot spreads to adjacent spaces, such as the attic, and provides a point of entry for rodents.

Leaks on the roof

Failure to drain your gutters will contribute to ice build-up in your gutters during the winter. This will keep the melted snow from running off the roof properly and will keep the water and wet snow against the house. Often times, that water will migrate into the home causing roof leaks, wall leaks, and moisture in the attic.

Insect infestation

Debris in gutters, especially when wet, is a very attractive habitat for insects. These insects will be attracted to the interior of the house when the weather changes, so they can cause an infestation of insects inside the house. Additionally, wood-eating insects such as termites and carpenter ants are attracted to rotting leaves and twigs that collect in gutters, so not cleaning them can lead to an infestation of those harmful pests.

Basement leaks

Just as clogged gutters can damage a building's foundation by allowing water to accumulate near the base of the structure, this water can also infiltrate basement walls. When water collects in large quantities against the basement wall, it is almost inevitable that it will find its way into the basement. If water seeps into the basement, this can cause black mold, odors, water damage, and flooding.

Landscape damage

Water that falls from clogged Gutter Cleaning Sydney can kill the plants and grass that live underneath. When those plants die, their roots no longer help keep the soil in place. The water will then wash off the exposed topsoil and sand. If left alone long enough, this erosion can damage the landscape below the clogged and leave a ditch.
