As an IT consultant, you offer a wide variety of services to organizations and business institutions. This is the thing you should do first when planning to start a consulting firm. There are three general classifications; one-to-one consultation, observation-based services and troubleshooting consultations. The first requires you to have a face-to-face discussion with your client. You may be asked to offer suggestions as part of the discussion. Observation consulting involves lots of work; you would have to gather information from the outside. The third requires you to understand problems and run tests designed to solve them. Whatever is your choice, make sure that you are able to offer quality service in the field.

A sales talk can be defined as a brief description of the services you offer. Make sure that it is small and up to the point. Your intention here is to help customers have an idea of what they can expect from you when hiring your services.

It is true that you should specialize in a domain to attract clients. But, focusing too much in one particular area may deprive you of potential customers. Try to be a bit generalized in your approach. When talking to a customer, you may come across minor troubles which may not be in your niche. Do not turn down a contract because you got focused too much in your choice field.

You should also have a project template at hand. This avoids the situation where you have to start from the scratch whenever you get a new contract. Pricing should be reasonable and strictly defined.
