What is Switchgear?

Working of Switchgear

In such a scenario, the equipment can be damaged, and the interruption will occur to the operators. To help during this fault, switchgear is used to detect the symptoms of a fault in the electrical distribution system. In this way, this works to protect the equipment from damage.

Types of Switchgears

There are three types of switch gears, namely LV (Low voltage), MV (Medium voltage) and HV (High voltage) Switchgear.

Low Voltage Switchgear

This is switchgear for low voltage equipment, i.e., up to 1KV. It mainly has switches, circuit breakers, earth leakages, miniature circuit breakers (MCB), and moulded case circuit breakers (MCCB).

Medium Voltage Switchgear

The power system which can handle up to the capacity of 36 kV is called the MV switchgear. You’ll come across these in various types, such as metal enclosure outdoor type, metal-enclosed indoor & outdoor type, etc.


High Voltage Switchgear

A power system which can take more than 36 kV. During the making of this device, special care is taken as the voltage level is very high. The main component of this equipment is the High Voltage (HV) circuit breaker.
