Posted by ronnie on February 15th, 2021

Just like any other appliance, your heat pump might run into problems. Maybe it would not turn on or not heat up appropriately. Similarly, it might not cool down after use or run constantly. Keeping that in mind, below are some of the most common heat pump problems and the reasons behind them. Keep reading to find what you can do to make your heat pump running again smoothly.

The heat pump not turning on

If your heat pump is not turning on at all, these three culprits can be the reason, such as:

- Power failure: Sometimes, a tripped breaker is all that is causing the issue. Check the breaker and make sure it is in the correct position. However, if it happens frequently, then there may be an electrical issue with your heat pump, and you should get it to check by an HVAC professional.

- Thermostat issues: Firstly, make sure that your thermostat is set correctly. If everything is set fine, then there may be an issue with your thermostat, and you need it to be serviced.

- Broken starter capacitor: Carefully listen to your heat pump, and if you hear a clicking noise, the problem is with the starter capacitor.

Heat pump not heating

If your heat pump is not heating usually, there are three issues:

- Blocked unit: Ice, snow, leaves, or any other type of debris is blocking the airflow to your unit; this can cause the heat pump to no work properly.

- Dirty air filter: An air filter with too much dirt and debris can prevent the heat pump from working properly.

Heat pump not cooling

- Thermostat: Check to see if the thermostat is set to cool. Even then, if the heat pump does not cool, your thermostat might not be okay.

- Low refrigerant: Low refrigerant levels can cause the heat pump to work hard to cool your home.
