Tips to Keeping Your New Years Fitness Resolutions

Plenty of people make fitness resolutions in the New Year, but ultimately, many people do not manage to achieve these goals. If you want to make sure that you achieve your New Year fitness resolutions, make sure that you follow these tips:

1.  Make sure that your goals are realistic

Choose goals that it is physically possible and realistic to achieve. Choosing something that is not realistic is automatically setting yourself up for a fall, because you will be more likely to quit when you realise that you are not getting close to your ultimate aim. If you are planning on aiming high, consider choosing incremental goals, so that you will not get disheartened.

2. Reward yourself (sensibly)

Reward yourself for making big steps towards your fitness goals. If you feel as though you have achieved something major, be prepared to treat yourself, as this will be good motivation. However, make sure that you are sensible with your rewards system. For example, rewarding yourself with high fat foods can undermine all of the hard work that you have already done.

3. Buddy up

Find a fitness buddy to work with, who can help to keep you motivated through your fitness journey. This can be someone who is at the same level as you (who can share all your trials and tribulations) or it can be someone whose strength and fitness you strive to achieve. Having a buddy to work with can help you to feel as though you are part of something larger. If you get the urge to quit, you will feel as though you are also letting your "buddy" down too. Having a buddy can also help to add a healthy competitive edge to your training.

4.  Consider convenience

Try to find a gym or workout space that is either close to your home or close to your work, or else integrate your workout into your daily routine in some other way, such as cycling to work instead of driving. Knowing that you have to get to the other side of the city to do your workout after finishing your day job can be de-motivating, so make it easier on yourself.

5. Monitor yourself

Keep a note of how you are performing and other fitness indicators, such as pulse, and breathing rates. Seeing how you improve is a great motivator, but it will also help you to spot areas where you may still struggle.
