The sudden rise in the number of salmonella infections has begun worrying everyone in the country. A lot of people aren’t even aware of what salmonella is, let alone the prevention & treatment of salmonella. To begin with, salmonella infection or salmonellosis is a very common bacterial disease that is known to affect the intestinal tract. Most people get infected after consuming contaminated food and water. In a majority of cases, people with salmonella have no symptoms, but there are also cases where people develop diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps, but recovery usually happens without any specific treatment. However,  in some cases, these symptoms may lead to dehydration which can then require proper medical attention including hospitalization.

Causes and symptoms of Salmonella

This infection is usually caused by eating raw or undercooked meat, poultry, eggs, or egg products. The symptoms usually start showing within the first 48 hours. The symptoms of salmonella infection are very similar to that of the stomach flu (gastroenteritis), and they are.

  •          Nausea
  •          Vomiting
  •          Abdominal cramps
  •          Fever
  •          Diarrhea
  •          Chills
  •          Headache
  •          Blood in the stools

After treatment, the symptoms may last for about a week. Diarrhea may persist for roughly 10 to 12 days. Whereas, it may take longer for the bowel movement to get back to normal.

Prevention & treatment of Salmonella

If you are a healthy adult who suffers from salmonella infection and one of your symptoms includes diarrhea, the doctor will suggest that you drink a lot of water and other fluids. Some doctors may also prescribe antibiotics. In the case of children, the doctor may let the infection run its course with increased water intake and prescribe a medicine in case of emergencies. For infants and old people the doctor needs to prescribe antibiotics to help them fight the infection.

To prevent yourself from getting infected, here is what you can do

  •          Avoid eating raw and undercooked meat and eggs
  •          Wash your hands regularly
  •          Wash your vegetables and fruits before consuming
  •          Don’t mix raw and cooked food
  •          Keep your kitchen neat and clean.
  •          Cook meat to its correct minimum temperature.
