Cardiac Ablation Catheters Find Application in Treatment of Arrhythmias When Me

Cardiac ablation catheters are used in the treatment of patients with cardiovascular disease, especially those with atrial flatterers. In this procedure, a tube is inserted into the heart to eliminate small areas of tissue that may be causing abnormal heartbeat. It is also referred to as laser ablation therapy. This procedure is used more often for the removal of atrial plaque, which is composed of a deposit of calcium and bilirubin made during times of fetal development. Atrial flatterness results in enlarged left ventricle and increased left ventricular dilation. The resulting cardiac arrest can be life-threatening.

Cardiac ablation catheters are used to perform small incisions. Small incisions are made in areas where large masses are expected to be found, such as in the chest wall or in the abdominal walls. The catheter is inserted into one of the cuts and is left for a few minutes. The procedure is performed on an outpatient basis under general anesthesia. During catheter ablation, a thin metallic tube or catheter ablation probe is first inserted into the heart by means of a cannula. Then, radio frequency waves are targeted to it using a laser or an external beam. This excites the catheter to break free from the surrounding plaque buildup. Once this process is completed, a balloon-like catheter is inflated to maintain the catheter's shape.
