The Department of Health  and Human services has developed a series of privacy and security regulations, which is collectively known as the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 ("HIPAA"). This act is specifically implemented to protect the privacy and the security rights of an individual with regard to their private or confidential medical records. This act greatly restricts the dissemination of patient personal information and dramatically change the way of administrative and security processes in the healthcare industry.

The HIPAA regulations have a great significance for all the covered entities in the healthcare industry.  Some of the covered entities include IT vendors, data administrator, senior network engineer, lawyers, chief information officers, IT professionals, consultants, security staffs, billing companies and the healthcare providers who transmit healthcare records in an electronic format. This act also provides a great impact on business associates. The act refers business associates as “any individual or organization that perform functions on the behalf of a covered entity, however not a part of the covered entity’s workforce”.

This rule is officially effective on April 14, 2001.  However, few times are given to the covered entity to become HIPAA compliant.  The primary focus of this act is to less the possibility of the dissemination of an individual health care information.  Earlier, the enforcement of this act was not so much strict.  However, these days the complaints are  strictly examined by the office of civil rights. Covered entities, which fail to comply with this act may incur stiff penalties, including the payment of a fine.   In some cases,  criminal charges may be brought against  the non-compliant entity.  Considering this as a main reason for the need of hipaa training.

This training will provide any covered entity an advanced competency in  preparing, executing and administering  comprehensive  security and privacy  protection programs in all levels and types of healthcare organizations.  The HIPAA training helps you to understand the following about HIPAA:
