So, you've already tried the App Ski Resort in Utah and are considering booking your Christmas ski holiday with them. What's stopping you? It seems there are always people trying to get away from their iPhones, and other technology distractions at this time of year. You're probably very excited about hitting the slopes, but don't want your wife to see you text every five minutes, or have your GPS constantly beeping. If you're thinking about App Ski Mountain, here are some things you need to think about before you book. - Are you going alone or with your family? There are a variety of different packages available for individuals, families, couples or even corporate groups. The prices vary accordingly, and can add up to a significant amount of money over the holiday season. If you're going with the entire family (which is often best advised if they're old enough to appreciate it), you should probably spend about the same as you would on an adult lift ticket. However, if you're going with the family, maybe put them in the snowmobile! - Where are you planning on going? There are some pretty remote areas in the Appley region that aren't open until late January or even early February. During these months only a few select lifts operate, so you'll have a better chance of getting to the slopes. However, the main mountains, including Arapahoe, Snowmass, and Mammoth Mountain, aren't open until March, so you'll have to wait. While you're planning your trip, keep in mind that many resorts charge a late fee if you book on or before their opening day. - How experienced are you? While there isn't an age limit, some slopes require that you be at least an intermediate skier in order to be competitive. If you're used to skiing downhill in winter, or at least know how to ski trails you can have no problem making the transition to slopes with more elevation. But if you're a first-timer you may want to practice on some of the gentler snow slopes nearby or go for the steepest trails you can find. - What equipment do you need? As with any other sport, you'll need the proper shoes. Get a pair that has good traction and good ankle support. In terms of bindings, if you're going off-piste or into the backcountry you'll need one with a boot instead of a full body harness. In addition, you'll need the right clothing: wool socks, a jacket, gloves, an under layers, and a headlamp or beacon. - Do I have a partner? Many groomers will be happy to put together a group ski trip. If you're going to be on your own, plan on spending a few extra hours on the slopes with your ski buddies. That way you'll know you're together, safe, and able to enjoy the snow when you're done. - How prepared are you? Get your skis packed and mailed out a week or two before Christmas. You'll also want to have a plan for picking up your boots and snowboard from the groomer. Pack warm clothing and plenty of food, and be sure to let the groomer know when you'll be leaving so he can be prepared - and have a crew ready to help on the day of your arrival. - Are you comfortable on skis or snowboards? Skiing or snowboarding can be quite dangerous. Don't take the risk. Make sure you feel secure and well-trained, and you'll have a great Christmas. - What gear do you have? Get all of the appropriate equipment. Know the terrain and level of snow, you're likely to face. Know how many lifts to use and how many days of skiing or snowboarding you'll need. A lot of groomers will be happy to show you their gear if you ask. Otherwise, just bring what you can. - Get started early. Get at least an hour of free skiing (or as many laps as possible) before you leave. By the time Christmas rolls around, you'll have an idea of how long the day will take and have a good idea of how many lifts you'll need. Appreciate the expertise of the groomer. Skiing App ski Mountain National Park is a beautiful, challenging, and rewarding experience that few get in. Even if you don't think you'll ever go skying, go for it. You'll have a blast. And when you do go skying, you'll be glad you took advantage of this great offer!
