Here are some tips on how to engage in social media activities.
Whether you plan to support Black Lives Matter, climate change activities, or other causes of social justice.
Social media and activism have been inseparable since 2013, when the 2010 Arab Spring demo and hashtag #BlackLivesMatter were first used. At both events, social media and hashtags played a key role in mobilizing human rights movements offline. They influenced the rise of social activities, including everything from #LoveWins to #TimesUp to #FridaysForFuture.
Until recently, social media activities were somewhat optional for brands. It was in 2018 that Nike worked with Colin Kaepernick to get a lot of attention. However, George Floyd's recent police death has prompted many people and businesses to seek neutrality in the face of police atrocities and organized racism, resulting in support for social media. Participating in social movements is right in the first place. But doing the right thing also has business benefits. Almost two-thirds of consumers believe it is important for businesses to take a position on social issues. And for many, taking a position is just the beginning. Here are some tips on how to go beyond hashtags for social media activities, whether you plan to support Black Lives Matter, climate change activities, or other causes of social justice.
What is Social Media Activism?

Without offline action, gestures such as the use of hashtags and the placement of black squares come across as executive, opportunistic, and lazy. Critics often quickly call these minimal efforts "slacktivism." Similarly, companies participating in social media activities that are inconsistent with past or present behavior can lead to repulsion and harm. There is also a word for that: "Wake up laundry".
Can businesses opt out of social media activities? I've acknowledged. But consumers are aware of it, employees are aware of it, and competitors are aware of it. According to a recent Morning Consult poll, the vast majority of people will see brands refusing to speak in a less favorable way.
10 Tips for Using Social Media to Show True Support for Justification
Display the social calendar. If you are using the social media scheduler, we recommend that you undo your scheduled posts. Believe that all the hard work spent on your perfect post isn't wasted. It was postponed for the time being. While things are dormant, take the time to learn about the exercises you are considering participating in.
Fenty Beauty, Glossier, Kotn, Nike, and Nickelodeon are just a few of the brands that discontinued promotional content at the start of the #BlackLivesMatter movement. During the climate strike last September, brands such as Patagonia, Rush and Seventh Generation closed their stores, became "dark" on social media and donated advertising space to the movement. Before returning to normal programming, consider how campaigns and content resonate within a larger context.
