HOW TO START AN ESSAY?

We all get stuck when it comes to how to start an essay? Things become much confusing when you get the task of writing an essay and you do not even know how to start an essay? I think every person faces the same situation because when you are an average scorer and you get the task of writing an essay without any instructions, you would surely get stuck.

So, I am going to tell you how to start an essay? beginning with the hook, then background and thesis statement.
So first, what is an essay? Well, an essay is a group of paragraphs that explain an idea. So how many paragraphs are in an essay? Well, there are three to five paragraphs in an essay. Now before the essay, usually you have a prompt, which is a question or statement that your essay answers.
Here is an example on your right on how to answer a prompt. The essay is made up of a series of units, let us say five units. We are going to write them down, and we might refer to these units as paragraphs.

• Introduction
• Paragraph 1
• Paragraph 2
• Paragraph Crunch
• Conclusion
So, the first paragraph is the introductory paragraph, the next paragraphs, i.e. two, three, and four, are called body paragraphs and the paragraph 5 is called the conclusion paragraph. When we write an essay, we need to be sure to clearly show where each paragraph begins. There are two ways to do this, and the first way is to use an empty line after each paragraph, see the empty lines.

The second way is to indent the first word of each paragraph and here is what the essay looks like when we have indented each paragraph by putting several spaces in front of the first word of the paragraphs.

Hook
The hook is an interesting sentence about the topic, and it is our first sentence in the essay. The topic is the thing or person you are writing about. We call the first sentence of an essay ‘the hook’ because this sentence hooks or catches the reader's attention and makes them want to read more of your essay.
There are many types of hooks but I am going to tell you about five hooks that I think are the easiest types to write, and I am going to give you an example of each one. So, the first type is a surprising fact or statistic about your topic. Here is an example:
“According to the fitness organization, one in four adults do now not get sufficient exercising”
Another type of hook is a gripping question,

For example:
“Does exercise only improve health if it's difficult?”
You can see how this type of question, if it comes first in the essay, might interest the reader in reading more to find the answer.
And finally, my favorite type of hook is a pretty simple one, which is a sentence that tells why the topic is important.
For example:
“People need exercise to stay healthy”
Now you see this type of hook is simpler than all the previous ones and not quite exciting as the others. However, some of the other types of hooks above, like the surprising fact or statistic and the wise quote, include very specific information, like numbers and facts. Hence, when you use specific information like this in an essay, you need to tell your readers the source from where you got the information so that they can check it themselves.
This requires that you put citations and a bibliography at the end of your essay. Citations and bibliographies are advanced topics that can get a little complicated and therefore, I will avoid them in this article. So, I am going to use the last type of hook in the example essay that we read. Let us look at a few more examples of hooks that tell why a topic is important. This time, we will look at the topics besides the exercise. Remember that when you write this type of hook, do not use the word ‘important’, but instead, show the reader why the topic is important. Because using the word ‘important’ will make your sentence sound a little too simple. So, let us say you are writing an essay about vegetables. You could use this hook, “Vegetables have vitamins that cannot be found in other foods”, and do you see how we stated why vegetables are important? But we did not oversimplify the sentence by using the word important.
Okay, so you start your introduction paragraph with the first sense called the hook, then you follow with sentences that tell the background information of your topic. Examples of background information include facts, numbers, group opinions, or history. These are just a few examples of background information and the type of background information you use. You should prepare your readers for your message about your topic. Now I am going to show you several types of background information that you can write in your essay after the hook.
The first type is a surprising statistic or fact about your topic. Here is an example:
“A sturdy 30-forty five min stroll increases your heart charge and burns over one hundred calories”
Remember a surprising statistic or fact can also be used as a hook. It is ok if you use a fact or statistic as both your hook and the background information as long as those two facts are different.

Thesis Statement
Now let us talk about the thesis statement to start an essay. After you have written the hook and background information on your topic, the next state is the thesis statement. The thesis statement contains your idea in your mind related to the topic. The main idea is your message about your topic, and sometimes instead of three reasons, you will need three steps in a process, three types of something, three parts of something, three examples of something, and whether you need a reason, steps types, parts are examples, depends on your topic and your main idea. I will give you several examples so that you clearly understand what if the statement is and how you write one about various topics that answer various prompts. The thesis statements answer the prompt in one sentence and include three reasons.
Remember, the essay prompt asks a question.
For example:
“What is the best exercise? Write an essay that explains your answer”
Thesis statement answers the question in the prompt.
For example,
The best exercise is walking because it is easy, convenient and usually done outside. Now the thesis statement answers the question in the prompt but we still need an entire essay to explain our thesis statement. Also, note that the thesis statement has the main idea which is the best exercise is walking and it has three reasons that tell us why the main idea is true, why is the best exercise is walking because it is easy convenient and usually done outside.
Let's see some more examples,
“Prompt to explain the way to get a motive force's license?”
An example thesis statement that answers this prompt is getting a driver's license requires a few steps, including learning rules, practicing driving, and past exams. The main idea in this thesis statement is that getting a driver's license requires a few steps. Now remember that getting a driver's license is a process, so instead of three reasons, this thesis statement will have three steps in a process. The three steps for getting a driver's license are to learn the rules, practice driving, and pass exams.
