Top 3 Advantages of LED Lights Over Incandescent Lamps

Posted by Philips Lighting on February 22nd, 2021

LED or Light Emitting Diodes, is the latest and most exciting technological advancement in the lighting industry. LED lights operate differently than incandescent lamps and are more rugged and durable when compared to traditional incandescent lamps. We will take a look at some of the reasons why LED lighting systems are preferred over incandescent lighting.

Lifespan

The most significant advantage of an LED light when compared to traditional lighting solutions is the longevity factor. The average LED is guaranteed by most manufacturers to operate for over 50,000 hours which is at least two to four times more than your most fluorescent, metal halide, and even sodium halide lamps. LED lights last almost 40 times as long as the average incandescent lamps. Based on normal office working hours, once an LED light is installed, it can be used for at least 10 years before starting to fade. Less frequent replacement is beneficial as it lowers the overall maintenance costs in terms of labour and lower costs for replacement parts as the lights last so long.

Improved Safety

Safety is one aspect that many people overlook when comparing lighting solutions. Heat emission is the number one concern when it comes to the safety hazards associated with lighting. The heat emitted from LED lamps is negligible whereas more than 90% of the energy used to power incandescent lamps is converted to heat. This means that only about 10% of the energy is actually used to produce light making these lamps extremely inefficient. Additionally, because LED lights consume lesser energy, they can operate very effectively even in low-voltage situations. This is considered safer in the event that something goes wrong. The absence of a glass bulb in the case of LED lights is another safety feature, as incandescent lamps which have a glass outer bulb are prone to breakage which could cause damage to humans and equipment.

Dimming Capability

With the proper drivers and hardware, LED lights are capable of operating at virtually any percentage of their rated power up to 100%. This is a unique feature of modern LED lighting solutions where the brightness can be controlled with precision. This kind of feature cannot be used when operating incandescent lamps. While operating LED lamps at less than full power, it results in further improvement of efficiency. This will also result in an increase in the lifespan of the light fixture itself.

LED lighting is suitable for futuristic smart lighting solutions. They are also easily disposed of when compared to traditional lighting solutions as they do not contain any toxic gases or chemicals. A lot awaits you when you switch to LED lighting to make your premises future-proof.
