Under counter freezer is now the favorite of homeowners all over the world. It helps you buy food items in bulk and save huge. The great thing is that it allows you to do it without causing any discomfort; the unit will stay under your working surface. However, to get the most from your investment, you should know how to take good care of it.

Under counter freezers: Tips on maintenance

Understand that your owner’s manual is the best guide when it comes to taking care of the unit. It will have clear instructions on how to perform even simple tasks. Every other source of information comes only after that. Here are some additional tips which may be of help to you.

   1.       Keep the unit neat and clean

Make it a point to clean the interior of your freezer as often as possible. A wet damp rag dipped in a mild detergent will do the job most of the time. Use cleaning sprays to get rid of the stains on the surface and the seal of the door. A good-quality deodorant will make sure that the unit smells fresh.  You can go either for herbal products or their commercial variants. Whatever is your choice, read the label and choose one with minimum amount of chemicals.

   2.       Defrost it at times

The freezer you have may be equipped with “auto-defrost” facility. Still, you will need to defrost it manually at regular intervals. Ice may get reserved on the appliance. This may have a negative impact on its efficiency. Frost buildup can also cause bad odor in the unit.

Take out all food items and keep them in a safe location before trying to defrost.

   3.       Replace the gaskets when needed

The gaskets covering the door of your freezer play a vital role in determining the durability of the unit. Make sure that they are always in good condition. This is a must for the door to shut tight. When the door seal loosens, air starts leaking from the inside. This will force the compressor to work hard; it will reduce the unit’s lifespan. Do not forget to clean them from time to time with a mild detergent. It will prevent dust and dirt from getting reserved in them.

   4.       Don’t overload your freezer

It is true that to work efficiently, a freezer unit should be filled to its capacity. But, this does not mean that you can overload it. A minimum amount of space is a must to ensure that the air inlets are not blocked. This is a must for proper air circulation. Negligence here will force the blower to work excessively hard and it will shorten the life of the unit.

Make sure that the items you store in the unit are properly covered. Doing this will prevent freezer burns.

Take good care of your under counter freezers. They are built to stay with you for a long time. Proper maintenance will make sure that you are able to get the most from them.
