How to participate in craft shows

Do you like to knit or make twig baskets? Whatever your skill or preferred craft, you should become a part of an event where you could sell your merchandise and gain more recognition from people who really appreciate handmade products.

For this, you need to participate in craft shows and make yourself known. A craft show is planned months before the actual event, so it is recommended that artisans discuss with those who organise the show early, to make sure they would participate in it.

Country shows are held either in the same location, year after year, or travel across the country. If you plan to increase your sales very fast, participate regularly in both types of shows. And do not forget to create an online presence, as well, because not everybody buys products at a craft show.

When the day of the event comes, get more products with you than you have intended, because you may find a customer willing to buy plenty of items from you and, if you are not a local, you would have to then send the items by courier and this would involve higher shipping fees.

Another thing that you have to consider prior to participating in craft shows is to get an example of a potential agreement that you could sign with a customer. Some of those who visit the craft show may be so impressed by your work, that they would want to sign an agreement with you and regularly buy the products you make, either to resell them or to offer them as gifts.

At country shows, not only organisers, artisans and potential customers are present, but also some other vendors; as such, one can meet at a country show food vendors, entertainers or people who trade animals. If you want to be invited next time at the show, you have to be polite to everybody present there.

In general, vendors are given a limited space where they can display their products. This way, artisans are placed next to other artisans, food vendors next to other food vendors, and so on. To be 100% certain their vendors would appreciate their location, country show organisers send them a site plan prior to the event. This plan can be altered until everybody is happy with their location.

To make sure you sell, you need to take something else into account, not only the location where you would display your merchandise; a very important thing that you have to consider is how you display it. If you sell handmade jewellery, take some holders and stands, and if you sell items made from rattan, use floral arrangements to create a lovely visual display.
