Finding a Weight Loss Surgeon: Personality Matters
Posted by NicholsonClinic on March 2nd, 2015
We’ve all been there – visiting a doctor who has a stellar medical reputation and who is obviously brilliant at what he/she does. But there is definitely a disconnect in terms of your personalities and instead of feeling comforted and relaxed about whatever medical care that doctor is providing you, you feel nervous, anxious, and even annoyed. There’s nothing wrong with you. The fact of the matter is that there will always be those people who you are instantly comfortable with and those that you are not. That’s the case in “real” life relationships and that’s the case with the people we entrust with our medical care. A doctor can be fantastic at what he does but if his personality is off-putting to us then the relationship may not be a successful one.
This is especially true when undergoing big procedures like weight loss surgery where there is an emotional as well as physical component. You want someone who is highly skilled at these procedures to be sure. But you also want someone who meets your emotional needs during a time when you are feeling particularly vulnerable. Everyone’s version of this is completely different depending on what’s important to you but here are some things to look for when vetting a weight loss surgeon:
*How does he/she make you feel in your appointments? Do you feel rushed or that he/she is spending time with you and wants to hear what you have to say – whether it’s your excitement or your concern?
*Are you encouraged to ask questions? Do you feel like your questions are adequately answered?
*Is there a team approach to treating patients at this practice? Do you feel that everyone is working together to offer you the tools to reach your goals?
*Do you feel like a person and not just a patient? It’s important that you feel cared for as a person with particular needs.
*Do you like your doctor? You’re going to be spending some time with this person and this practice. It’s important that you not only respect your doctor on a professional level but that you like him as a person who will be caring for you and leading you on this journey to good health.
