The Best Opening Moves that Can Make You Win the Game

Chess champ, Bobby Fischer once said, "In chess, so much depends on opening theory, so the champions before the last century did not know as much as I and other players do about opening theory. If you brought them back from the dead, they wouldn't do well, they'd get bad openings." This came straight from the mouth of chess champ Bobby Fischer, one of the world's most respected grandmasters and it only goes to show just how important opening moves are in the game.

With the endless number of possibilities, combinations, and move variations in chess, it is easy to lose grip of the game even after only a few moves. There are many popular chess openings that many players, including chess masters use because of their time-tested strength. Recognizing the upper hand that strong opening moves offer and understanding their basics will help you gain the confidence and the control you need during the opening phases of your games. The following are some of the most popular starting moves many players use:

  • The Ruy Lopez or Spanish Game opening – This opening got its name from the Spanish priest who fist analyzed its moves way back in 1561. Half a millennium later, Ruy Lopez opening has become one of the most widely used openings by players at all levels. Different variations of the opening have been studied and a great variety of strategic plans are also available to both the white and black. To reach its starting position, player must follow this sequence of moves: e4e5 – Nf3Nc6 – Bb5. Some popular lines used in the Ruy Lopez include the Steinitz Defense, Berlin Defense, and the Morphy Defense.

  • Italian Game opening - The Italian game opening is one of the oldest chess openings, developed in the 1600s. The game is reached by the following sequence of moves: e4e5 – Nf3Nc6 – Bc4. The Italian opening remained a popular style through the 19th century, succeeded by the Spanish game as white's favorite choice for improved defense.

  • French Defense – E4e6 is a common game opening, conceding the central space to the white player and limiting the scope of the white king's bishop, but preventing tactics against F7, all while allowing counterplay in the center and black activity on the queenside.

Learning strong opening moves is one of the best ways to get better at chess. Enrolling your child in a well recognized online chess school, where he or she can interact with skillful coaches and other chess prodigies can help them reach their potential in the game.
