Depression - this is one of the most-heard words today. If you observe you will realize that someone close either from work or friend circle has been a victim. But what is the actual clinical definition of this state of gloom? Being depressed is a state of mood that averts a person from the normal course of life. The person goes through a phase characterized by gloom, vacuum, melancholy, hopelessness and anxiousness and soon loses interest in life. The ailment is such that it requires clinical diagnosis and close observation as this state of mind can lead to loss of appetite or a surge to over eat, sleeplessness, lack of concentration, irritation, excessive surge to sleep, tiredness or lack of energy and in the most fatal case a surge to be suicidal.

Depression is a state of mind that happens due to psychiatric disturbances, the level of which varies from person to person. It can lead to major depressive disorder if not treated at the earliest. The most common reasons that lead to feeling depressed are sexual abuse during childhood or puberty, bereavement in family, some major issue that leads to severe tension, unequal treatment of siblings by the parents, peer pressure, troubled relationship, financial trouble, problem at the workplace, domestic violence and so on. Most are commonly heard issues which, when not properly handled, can lead to this unfortunate condition.

Other than the above psychological reasons postnatal period, menopause or a sudden injury leading to physical deformity can also lead to being depressed. These are phases in life when your mental condition is at a tender state and you are more susceptible to depression. However, like any other clinical disorder this also has its own remedies. Thus, whenever you feel a persistent low mood or any one or more syndromes of depression, try self-treatment first. Relax yourself as much as you can during the pangs. Then, question yourself on what exactly makes you feel so low.

When you get the exact answer, tell yourself not to brood much and feel helpless but rather switch your thoughts (‘brain switching’ as it is said in the techniques of cognitive behavior) to good things at every pang of depression. Ask someone close by to assist you in such times. Talk your heart out as sharing lightens the burden of feeling depressed. Do not entertain anything negative in life, be it a song that makes you sad, photographs that make you cry or people who make you feel low.

It is important to know that the brain follows the path of the current thought process. So, make an effort to be happy and do things that make you happy no matter how silly they are to the world. There are several online forums which delve on depression where you can share your experience and take advice from others who have walked on the same path before. This definitely brings a lot of solace to the mind. Blogs by other victims can be a moral support that can lead you out from being depressed. All it needs is a caring heart and time that can pull you out of this trap.

It is wise to treat depression at the very initial stage. Join an online forum that can advice you on how to deal with the feeling of being depressed.
