Everything has a price in this modern world; there is a financial component to even the most sensitive of human experiences. In terms of cancer care, when emotions are already running high and health and even lives are on the line, the very last thing that people want to be concerned with is money. But the truth is that the cost of cancer care is high and the complexities of determining what insurance coverage is available can be enormously overwhelming. Managing cancer includes doctor visits with a variety of professionals, as well as undergoing a variety of tests and treatment procedures - all of which accrue tremendous cost.

Understanding what to expect with regard to planning for cancer care treatment is important for helping to determine what insurance will cover as well as planning for any costs that may be your direct responsibility. Here are some of the items that are a part of the costs of treating cancer:

  • Tests. Before, throughout, and after treatment there are variety of tests that will be ordered to determine the extent of disease as well as how treatment is impacting the cancer. This will include blood tests as well as imaging tests such as PET/CT scans, MRIs, x-rays, etc. All of these tests are billed separately and are ordered as needed.
  • Visits to doctors and specialists. Generally covered with an insurance determined co-pay if the provider is in-network.
  • Treatment procedures. Including radiation (external, internal, both), chemotherapy, and any surgery that is required.
  • Stays in the hospital. Treatment and surgery will often result in stays in the hospital of different lengths of time.
  • Costs of drugs. Including prescription and non-prescription.
  • Any home care that is needed. Including drugs, equipment, and any home health care aids.

Understanding what to expect financially will allow you to ask the right questions of your doctor so that you can plan accordingly.
