Lowering Risk for Colon Cancer

Posted by Northtexascancer on March 10th, 2015

According to the American Cancer Society, approximately one in twenty people in the U.S. alone will be diagnosed with colon cancer in their lifetime, making it one of the more commonly diagnosed cancers. As we begin to better understand the connection between risk factors and the development of cancer, we also better understand the ways in which we can lower our risks for these cancers - including colon cancer.

Here are some of the ways in which we can do what we can to lower our risk of developing colon cancer as well as adequately protect ourselves if a diagnosis is made:

Change our diet. Out with the high-fat, high-calorie, fried foods. In with fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. It is also recommended for prostate health to lower our intake of red meat and/or processed meats. It is also recommended to limit our alcohol intake to no more than two drinks a day for men and one drink a day for women. Additionally, eating healthier helps to get us to - and keep us at - a healthy weight. A healthy BMI can help reduce the risk of cancer.

Increase exercise. Regular activity is enormously important for staying healthy on many levels and that includes lowering our risk of cancer. Those who do not stay active are at greater risk for developing a variety of health conditions including colon cancer.

Quit smoking. If you’ve never smoked, good for you! Don’t start! If you are currently smoking, it’s time to quit. Smoking has been linked to many cancers in general including colon cancer.

Get screened. The colonoscopy, the accepted method for screening for colon cancer, is recommended starting at the age of 50 although your risk factors and/or symptoms may call for earlier screening. Work with your doctor to determine when and how often screening will work best for you.
