This is because the country is host to half of the world remaining population of the endangered mountain Gorilla. The country has a number of gorilla parks where one can go on safari to view these magnificent animals. The most visited of these parks are Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. You are, however, required to obtain a gorilla permit before being allowed into the parks. This permit allows you to get to a few feet of the animals as direct contact is not allowed. You however, get to see a host of other animals as you go on your safari. These include the big five, numerous bird species and if you are adventurous enough you can also incorporate mountain climbing and rafting to your itinerary. One of the distinguishing features about these primates is the fact that their bodies are very hairy as compared to those of other primates. This is necessary because of the cold and wet temperatures that they have to endure in the rain forests. It is also easy to differentiate a full-grown male from a female. Males develop a silver streak of hair on their backs and are hence called Silverback whereas the females do not develop this streak at all. The males have a body weight that is almost double that of their female counterparts. These stout and strong animals are a must see for any one who would like to view our closest relatives in the animal kingdom. The primates are generally gentle apart from when two Silverback from different troops meet and a fight erupts. These fights can sometimes turn tragic with the death of one of the Silverback. As you prepare to go and meet the animals a few rules and precautions are insisted upon. These are to ensure your safety and that of the animals. First, you are required to keep a safe distance from the animals; this is usually between five and fifteen feet away. You are also required to avoid speaking in loud tones while around the animals, eating and drinking. In case the animals charge at you, you are advised to stay put on the ground and avoid eye contact with the animals. Flash cameras are not permitted. You are not allowed to touch the animals. There is also a time frame given in which you are not supposed to exceed when visiting the animals. Due to the fact that gorillas can easily contract diseases from humans, sick persons with contagious diseases are advised to postpone their safari until they get better. Coughing and sneezing in the presence of these animals should be avoided to avoid contaminating the primates. There are other serious situations which pose as threats to these animals; they include poaching and loss of habitat. In order to see the primates, you will need to climb steep slopes in dense forest cover. This proves as a very exciting hiking experience within the dense rain forests.
