Benefits of Swimming

There are a lot of benefits of swimming, whether it's at your local aquatic center, or as is more likely the case these days, in the backyard in an above ground swimming pool. Here are some of my favorite benefits of swimming.

The physical benefits of swimming have been time-tested; swimmers have used the water's resistance to their advantage for thousands of years.

Now, aerobic exercise such as swimming is an excellent activity for young and old alike and involves all muscles. However, learning water safety is essential for anyone while swimming. When you consider the physical and mental benefits of swimming, you may wonder what could possibly be lacking when you jump into the pool.

Below, we will discuss some of the benefits of swimming that will make your swim workout more enjoyable.

Stress relief is one of the most obvious benefits of swimming. Swimming has proven to be a great stress reliever and will help improve your overall well-being. As a matter of fact, swimming has been proven to decrease the symptoms of both high and low blood pressure and reduce the heart rate of those with heart problems or who have angina. These same benefits are also provided by regular aerobics and walking. Many people who work out on a regular basis to find that they enjoy the increased heart rate, improved energy and general fitness that swimming provides. These improved blood circulation benefits are also responsible for providing the extra oxygen needed by the brain during exercise.

Another of the many benefits of swimming regularly is improving your cardiovascular health. By swimming, you will discover a number of different ways in which you can expend more energy and calories throughout your daily activities. In addition, you will find that each time you perform a workout, your heart rate and oxygen levels will increase. The more you exercise, the more stress is released and the more beneficial these workouts become to your cardiovascular health.

One of the greatest benefits of swimmers breathing in the same air as their lungs is that it helps to improve lung efficiency. This efficiency makes it easier for swimmers to lose weight and lower their blood pressure. This reduction in blood pressure makes it easier for swimmers to get more workouts and make more effective use of their lungs. Those who breathe in fresh air experience significantly less coughing and spasm related to lung inflammation. In addition, the oxygen levels in their blood increase.

Finally, another of the many benefits of swimming involves the benefit of resistance training for the entire body. Resistance training exercises, such as swimming, provide the muscles of the body a greater ability to contract and lengthen while at the same time increasing muscle size. This added ability provides swimmers with an increased ability to generate more lung capacity, improve strength, improve balance, and burn additional calories. Swimmers who regularly perform resistance training benefits the entire body.

To receive all of these benefits of swimming, you need to perform a variety of different workouts that use several of the main benefits of heart rate and resistance training. For example, if you are going to be working on your arms you should do arm curls, tricep pressdowns, and triceps kickbacks. For the chest, you can do bench presses, incline dumbbell press downs, and flat bench dumbbell press downs. For your legs, squats, and lunges will help increase your metabolism. Lastly, performing high intensity interval training will further aid in your success in improving your athletic performance.
