Effective Ways To Keep Your Motorized Unicycle Safe During Winter

Posted by electric unicycle on March 11th, 2021

As it gets chilly outside, it is important to know how your electric unicycle will behave in rough winter weather – wind, rain, and even ice or snow. As the temperatures go down, there are some things to consider: ensuring you and your unicycle are ready to ride in the rough winter conditions and if you will not be riding, you want to ensure you are storing your unicycle properly so that it is ready to go without negative storage side effects when you bring it from hibernation.

Avoid storing your unicycle at 100% charge

One thing you have to do if you will not be riding your unicycle this winter is to think about taking good care of the battery when it is not in use. Li-Ion batteries experience faster degradation and stress when they are fully charged. You need to think of it like a balloon that has been over-inflated to the maximum. The battery is typically more stressed when it is at its full capacity. While this is acceptable during daily use because the battery won’t remain fully stressed for a long time, but when you are storing your unicycle you should ensure to not leave the battery of your unicycle fully charged for a couple of weeks or months.

Do not store your unicycle at a low charge

While it is not recommended to store your unicycle at 100% full charge, it is harmful to your battery when you store it at an extremely low charge. Even electric unicycle dealers avoid this mistake when the unicycle is still in store. It is normal for the cells of the battery to discharge slowly even when the unicycle is not in use. If you allow the battery of your unicycle to fully discharge, it can cause an inability to charge your unicycle with a standard charge or even permanently damage your battery. The best percentage to store your unicycle is between 50% to 80% battery charge.

Store your unicycle at a room temperature

It may be tempting to store your unicycle in the garage or upstairs in your attic. However, you should consider doing this if they are temperature controlled to ensure that the temperatures are close to room temperatures. If it is uncomfortable for people to stay in such environments, it will also be uncomfortable for your battery.

Expect less range when riding in winter

Li-Ion batteries have a reduced capacity when temperatures are cold. This effect can worsen during winter. It is therefore important to plan and ensure you have enough juice to get where you are going. As the temperatures get warmer, you will reduce your range going up as well.

When riding your electric unicycle in rain, the range will depend on the model of your unicycle. Not all unicycles are sealed against weather the same way. Light rain should be okay for your unicycle but you will need to use restraint when the rain becomes heavy especially if you are using a model that is less weather resistant.
